Club América in Search of Their First Three Points vs Xolos

Club América returns to the Estadio Azulcrema for their first home match of the season for a midweek clash against Club Tijuana where three points feel nothing short of necessary. After a disappointing 1–1 draw last Friday against FC Juárez, Las Águilas are under pressure to bounce back before Sunday’s Campeón de Campeones showdown. A win is crucial, but with injuries and suspensions piling up, this won’t be an easy task. Once again, all eyes turn to Alejandro Zendejas, the team’s new number ten, to lead the way.

Will José Zuñiga Make His Debut?

The short answer is yes, but most likely off the bench. The Colombian striker arrives with high expectations after tying as the league’s top scorer last season. While some americanistas have questioned the signing due to his age (31) and whether he fits the club’s long-term vision, Zuñiga’s profile offers much-needed depth to an injury-prone front line. His presence also lights a competitive fire under Henry Martín and Rodrigo Aguirre. If Zuñiga comes on and makes an immediate impact — particularly with a goal — it could dramatically shift the hierarchy up top heading into a congested fixture list. In this game particularly, his physical presence can be an added bonus for players like Brian Rodríguez and Alejandro Zendejas to play-off him with quick one-two passes.

Zendejas Must Shine Again

Alejandro Zendejas was one of the few bright spots in the season opener, scoring and impressing in his central role. With Álvaro Fidalgo out injured and Erick Sánchez suspended, Zendejas will again need to be the spark that ignites América’s attack. Expect him to play in the pocket, drifting between the lines to break open Xolos’ back line. Whether it’s through a key pass or a daring dribble, Zendejas will have to take charge creatively and help unlock the game, especially as midfield options remain limited.

Predicted Starting XI vs Tijuana

André Jardine faces a challenge piecing together a reliable midfield. With Fidalgo and Sánchez unavailable, the center of the pitch becomes the team’s most fragile area. Given those circumstances, Jardine may once again opt for a back five, especially now that Israel Reyes returns from his post-Gold Cup break, offering a ball-playing option out of defense.

Predicted XI (5-2-3):

GK: Luis Malagón

DEF: Dagoberto Espinoza, Israel Reyes, Igor Lichnovsky, Sebastián Cáceres, Ralph Orquin

MID: Alan Cervantes, Jonathan dos Santos

FWD: Alejandro Zendejas, Brian Rodríguez, Rodrigo Aguirre
